Hurricane Season Pool Checklist for the Westbank
What to do with your pool before a storm hits Gretna, Harvey or Terrytown — and how to bring it back once the power is on.
Before the storm
Do not drain your pool. With the high water table on the Westbank, an empty pool can float or crack. The water is the weight holding your shell in place.
Shock the water heavily and add algaecide so it can survive several days without filtration. Turn off the breaker to the pump and heater, and shut the automation down so a power surge does not take your board with it.
Secure the deck
Chairs, tables, umbrellas and toys become projectiles. Put them inside a garage or shed instead of in the pool — throwing furniture in the water scratches plaster and stains the surface with rust.
Lift the pool cleaner out and remove the skimmer lids only if you have loose debris upstream; otherwise leave them seated so nothing large gets into the plumbing.
After the power comes back
Clear the deck and skim heavy debris before the pump runs, so leaves do not pack the impeller. Empty every basket, then start the pump and watch for pressure changes.
Expect to run the filter around the clock for two to three days, backwash more than usual, and shock repeatedly. Most storm pools clear in under a week when they are treated in the right order.
